The Arising Star Graduate Student award and scholarship was created by Arise Consultation and Training Services to empower Black students who are working to bring mental health to Black communities.
The 2023 Arising Star recipient was Alexis Faison, LAC, NCC. Alexis is a fifth year doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at Arizona State University. She is passionate about dismantling structural barriers that impede access to culturally responsive mental healthcare. She advocates and provides spaces for clients to feel seen, heard, and validated. Alexis recently defended her dissertation entitled, AfroLatinx Health Disparities during the COVID-19 Pandemic. She uses social justice and multicultural approaches in both research and practice as she desires to serve historically marginalized communities. Upon graduation, Alexis aspires a career as a Black psychologist serving the community and teaching the next generation of counselors and psychologists.
Alexis is a published researcher, focusing on Afro/Puerto Rican health. She has presented her research exploring mental health within communities of Color both locally and nationally. Alexis recognizes the blessings and burdens of being Black, a woman, a mother, a student, a wife, and a clinician. We need to see more of us.
Alexis, we are so honored to have the opportunity to present this award and $2000 scholarship to you!!! We see you and we thank you for your dedication to serving our communities!!!
